PROMOTIONS POLICY EXPLAINED
30 Sep 2014, 14:21

We believe that many have lose sight of what TIG really is. It is merely a guideline saying that and individual must hold a certain rank for X amount of months before they are ELIGIBLE for a promotion. Promotion was never designed to be an automatic, time based event. Basing promotions simply on TIG cheapens the promotion, and means that rather than a badge of competency, rank becomes simply a testament to longevity.

If your TIG makes you eligible for promotion, what have you done, that makes you worthy of the promotion you are hoping for? Have you volunteered to do things around your station? Are you performing your patrols, signing in the forums, taking the training that is provided? Have you checked in with your CO to see if they have any projects for you? So I ask you, if you are constantly in world, and you are doing just the bare minimum, do you really deserve a promotion? If you have been LOA for a month, how can your CO justify recommending you for a promotion?

Station COs, when you look at your station rosters, and you see the names of people who are eligible for promotion, are they only a name? Do you ever see them at your station? Do you see them interact with others in SLCG Chat? Or, are they a person who only comes to your station once a week, does a 30-minute patrol and then you never see them again until the next week? Check with your CPOs, are they interacting with the person? I ask you, if someone is constantly in world, but seldom is doing anything SLCG related, if they are doing the absolute minimum, do they really deserve a promotion?

In the form that is filled out for a promotion request, there is a space that requires the Station CO to justify the recommended promotion. I recommend that you start using it. Tell of the amazing things that your staff has done to earn the promotion. Brag on your staff, we do have some truly talented people in the SLCG. Some of your comments may be incorporated in the ceremony.

Use TIG as a way to start a dialog with your staff. "Petty officer, I see that you are eligible for promotion, let’s talk about what I am seeing from you and what I'd like to see from you"... "Sir/Ma'am I am going to be eligible for a promotion at the end of the month, what do you feel I need to do to earn this promotion"

One final note, if you do not receive the promotion you were expecting, your first stop should be your Station CO.

Here is hoping for some good dialog at the stations and some well-written, well-reasoned promotion requests.

would like to clear the air, on promotions..

A promotion is not just TIG or what we call 'Time in Grade'. To be promoted you need to show professionalism and achievement in the following areas.

*Team effort
*Reporting skills
*Station Attendance/manning
*SLCG Training Paths
*Problem Solving
*Patrols from assigned stations
*Professional attitude fitting that of becoming an Officer.

This is the criteria we use to equally evaluate each person and make recommendations on promotions when it is warranted. Without these you may not be promoted.

Thank you,
