ENLISTED/OFFICER RANKS vs. BILLETS (Jobs)

I sometimes forget that most of our members have never served a day in a real world military and therefor can become lost or confused in regards to Rank vs. Billet. In short, a billet is your job. A rank is your achivement level. Below are some examples. I hope this will help.

Definition: BILLET: A position of employment; a job.
1. Coxswain (CW)
2. Aircraft Commander (AC)
3. Command Master Chief (CMC) or (CMCPO)
4. Executive Officer (XO)
5. Commanding Officer (CO)

Definition: RANK: System of hierarchical relationships in military forces Usually, uniforms denote the bearer's rank by
particular insignia affixed to the uniforms.
1. Seaman Recruit (SR)
2. Petty Officer (PO)
3. Chief Petty Officer (CPO)
4. Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO)
5. Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO)
6. Ensign (ENS)
7. Lieutenant Commander (LCDR)
8. Rear Admiral (RADM
